Exercise Is Medicine Singapore (EIMS)

Allied Health & Fitness Professional Course

/banner_btn_fp.20130425.jpgAs a fitness professional, you are well aware of many of the benefits of exercise in preventing chronic disease. But physical activity offers much more than prevention alone. Exercise can also be a powerful complement to traditional medical intervention and, in many instances, may allow a physician to significantly reduce a patient's drug dosage or eliminate the need for medicine altogether. You can play an integral role in educating your clients about the medicinal benefits of exercise and how they can speak with their primary care physicians about physical activity.

In 2011, Changi Sports Medicine Centre, together with the American College of Sports Medicine launched the Exercise is Medicine Singapore (EIMS) initiative as a health strategy to promote collaboration between health care providers and fitness professionals in Singapore. The EIM initiative now includes a credential program that will provide exercise professionals with the opportunity to work closely with the medical community and provide numerous additional benefits to the certified professional

We now bring you the EIMS Allied Healthcare Professionals Course. The course aims to provide fitness professionals with the framework to work closely with the medical community to deliver supervised exercise programmes to clinical populations.

The benefits to participants include:

  • The competency to safely supervise exercise that has been prescribed for the client by his or her doctor
  • A respected credential to work with individuals with chronic health diseases who have been cleared by their physicians for exercise
  • Credentialed fitness professionals will be included in a referral list for health care providers (namely doctors and physiotherapists) looking for fitness professionals who are eligible to work with their patients
  • An opportunity for fitness professionals to market to health care providers and to develop or cultivate patient referrals on a regular basis

The course includes lectures, practicum and case discussions, culminating in a written assessment. Fitness professionals who successfully complete the course will be awarded the EIMS Allied Healthcare Professionals Certification by the EIMS Advisory Board.
